Q-Tipped Propellers are specially designed to reduce noise

A special type of propellers can be designed to reduce noise. It is called Q-Tip Design Propellers and they are characterized by blade to bent back 90°. 


Propellers of the Q-Tip Design are characterized by the tip of each blade to be bent back of 90° to reduce noise. Q-Tipped Props were originally designed to increase the clearance from the blade tips to the fuselage in twin engine aircraft. This new project reduced considerably cabin noise wile maintaining almost unaffected the production of thrust.

 

 

Later on these type of props have been adopted also on some single engines with the main purpose of reducing prop diameter, thus having slower wing tip speed, resulting in noise abatment. Blade tip speed is a very important factor to consider because, approching the speed of sound, shockwave are developed. Shockwaves cause a substancial loss of prop efficinecy together with a major raise in noise.

 

An other advantage was the greater distance between ground and prop, that was increasing prop liftime by diminishing the possibility to debris to strike it.
